El Matador Beach Engagement Session | Kevin & Cynthia | Malibu, California

Natural light Engagement Photographer_1927.jpg

When Kevin, Cynthia and I were discussing where they’d like to shoot, they described a location that felt California and captured the essence of Malibu. With its breathtaking rock formations, golden light, and stunning cliffside views, I knew Matador Beach in Malibu, California would be the perfect fit for the look they desired. As a natural light photographer, this Southern California location is a dream and feels more like a cliffside Italian destination.

The part of love most about shooting at Matador Beach is that every session feels and look different as the landscape changes and the seasons evolve. Just as no couple’s story is the same, I always try to capture a location I’ve shot at several times in a way that feels personal to my client. In Kevin and Cynthia’s case, they’ll be having a Malibu wedding next year and wanted images to display on their day that felt consistent with the tone of their venue.

I was so grateful for how much Kevin and Cynthia trusted me on this shoot. They were up for doing everything I asked them to do from climbing jagged rock formations in floor length dresses to trying challenging lift poses. The best part is, they made it look so fun and natural throughout the process!

When shooting at the beach, it’s important to remember a few important things for a successful session:

  • Be prepared for your clothing to get wet. Part of the beach experience is the ever changing tides. I’ve been known to end sessions by asking my couples to run into the water because I have always felt there is nothing more romantic than capturing a couple in their playful state.

  • Embrace the “beach hair don’t care” look. Beach air and breezes can cause hair to evolve throughout a shoot giving you a wild and carefree look. It’s always a good idea to bring a hairbrush for occasional hair touch ups through out your shoot.

  • Wear clothing that is consistent with the tones of the location. In this case, Matador Beach is predominately beautiful warm, neutral tones.

  • Make sure your outfit feels comfortable when you move. Your ability to move freely and without self conscious concerns helps me to capture beautiful candid moments when you’re focused on each other and not adjusting your attire.
